July 4th Weekend

After stopping in Jefferson City for ice cream at Central Dairy, we continued our adventure with a visit to Willmore Lodge and Bagnell Dam.

Our family weekend at the lake was relaxing and enjoyable. Between the rain showers we enjoyed shopping at the outlet mall and enjoyed an outdoor BBQ.

Willmore Lodge- On the way to the lake house we stopped at the Willmore Lodge. The lodge is preserved as an historic site and it houses a small museum with history from the region. It is also a visitor's center for the Lake of the Ozarks.

The lodge was built in 1930 and has twenty-nine rooms held together by wooden pegs. Western pine logs from the Pacific Northwest were the main building materials, along with local stone and concrete for the foundation.

Bagnell Dam- Bagnell Dam impounds the Osage River in Missouri, creating the Lake of the Ozarks. The 148-foot tall concrete gravity dam was built by the Union Electric Company(now Ameren UE) for the purpose of hydroelectric power generation as its Osage Powerplant. It is 2,543 feet long, including a 520-foot long spillway and a 511-foot long power station. The facility with eight generators has a maximum capacity of 215 megawatts.

The dam derives its name from Bagnell, Missouri at the dam site which preceded the dam. It in turn derives its name from William Bagnell who began the town in 1883.
Construction started on the dam in 1929 and was completed in 1931. The resulting reservoir, the Lake of the Ozarks, has a surface area of 55,000 acres, over 1,150 miles of shoreline, and stretches 92 miles from end to end. At the time of construction it was one of the largest man-made lakes in the world and the largest in the United States.

My family likes to play jokes and this is what we woke up to on Friday morning.

July 4th outdoor BBQ.

My dad and my father-in-law enjoy reading and relaxing at the lake.

Our parents pose for a 4th of July picture.
